Operation of 3m optical cable splice package

The 3M Fibrlok II 2529 provides a permanent mechanical splice for single- or multimode fibers, requiring proper fiber preparation, cleaving, insertion, and securing using the Fibrlok assembly tool and splice tray.Fiber PreparationClean and strip the fiber: Remove the protective coating to expose the bare fiber, typically using a buffer stripper compatible with 250 µm to 900 µm fiber coatings .Clean the fiber: Wipe the bare fiber with an alcohol-soaked, lint-free wipe to remove any debris or oils .Cleaving: Use a precision cleaver (e.g., Fibrlok 2534) to produce a clean, perpendicular cleave with a tolerance of ±0.5 mm. The cleaved end should be free of defects and angled no more than 2° unless using a controlled angled cleaver .Splice AssemblyLoad the splice: Remove the Fibrlok II 2529 splice from its protective package and place it into the Fibrlok 2501 assembly tool .Adjust the assembly tool: Rotate the toggle arms to match the fiber coating diameter (inward for 250 µm, outward for 900 µm), .Insert the first fiber: Push the cleaved fiber into the splice until resistance is felt. The fiber should be straight or have a slight bow (up to 3 mm), with no bare glass visible outside the splice .Insert the second fiber: Repeat the process for the second fiber, ensuring proper alignment and contact within the splice.Securing and OrganizingActuate the splice: Once both fibers are inserted, the Fibrlok mechanism secures the fibers permanently, providing low-loss optical performance .Label and store: Place the completed splice into a Fibrlok 2523 splice organizer tray or 2524 splice tray for protection and organization. These trays can accommodate up to 48 fibers and fit into various closures, including 3M 2177, 2178, or 2190 closures .Best PracticesEnsure the splicing area is clean, dry, and well-lit to improve efficiency and reduce contamination .Periodically check cleave lengths during splicing operations to maintain consistency .Avoid touching the cleaved fiber ends after cleaning to prevent contamination .Use isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes for cleaning, and follow all safety precautions, including eye protection . By following these steps, the 3M Fibrlok II 2529 splice provides a secure, permanent, and low-loss connection suitable for both repair and new network installations, with minimal tooling and fast installation time .
