East Africa Fiber Optic Cable

East Africa is connected to global and regional networks through major submarine cables like EASSy and 2Africa, complemented by extensive terrestrial fiber deployments across multiple countries.Major Submarine CablesEASSy (Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System) is a key undersea fiber optic system linking Eastern African countries to the global internet. It runs from Mtunzini in South Africa to Port Sudan in Sudan, with landing points in nine countries and connections to at least ten landlocked nations, reducing reliance on satellite internet. EASSy has a 2 fiber-pair configuration with a design capacity exceeding 10 terabits per second and provides direct connectivity to Europe and North America, with built-in end-to-end resilience and interconnections to other international submarine networks. The cable entered service in July 2010, partially funded by the World Bank . 2Africa is another transformative submarine cable project, designed to enhance connectivity between Africa, Europe, and Asia. It integrates with existing systems like SEA-ME-WE 5 and AAE-1, offering high capacity and faster transmission to meet growing bandwidth demands. The project aims to expand reliable, high-speed internet access across the continent, supporting digital transformation, economic growth, and regional integration .Terrestrial Fiber NetworksTo extend connectivity inland, terrestrial fiber optic networks have been deployed in East Africa. The East and Central Africa Optical Fiber Roll-Out project covers over 4,850 km, including 3,850 km of terrestrial fiber and around 1,000 km of submarine cable in Lake Tanganyika and Lake Albert. This initiative spans Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, targeting regions where broadband access is limited or expensive. The project enhances digital services, supports economic development, and improves access to reliable internet .Regional ImpactThese submarine and terrestrial networks collectively improve internet speed, reliability, and capacity for both coastal and landlocked countries. They enable better access to digital services, e-government, education, and business opportunities. Projects like EASSy and 2Africa, along with regional terrestrial extensions, are crucial for bridging the digital divide, fostering economic growth, and integrating East Africa into the global digital economy . In summary, East Africa's fiber optic infrastructure combines high-capacity submarine cables with strategically deployed terrestrial networks, ensuring robust connectivity for urban centers and landlocked regions, while supporting the continent's ongoing digital transformation.
